Reformer, Tower, or Wunda Chair? The Pilates apparatus, explained

Classical Pilates apparatus against the terracotta wall

Scan our weekly schedule and you'll see names most gyms never use: Tower Fundamentals, Wunda Beginner, Core Suspend & Mat Flow. That's deliberate. Joseph Pilates designed a whole family of apparatus, each teaching your body something the others can't — and studios that only own reformers can only show you part of the method.

Here's what each one is, in plain English, and how to choose.

The Reformer — where almost everyone starts

The reformer is the sliding carriage with springs, ropes, and a footbar. The springs both assist and resist you, which makes it the most versatile teacher in the room: light springs can support a beginner's first footwork, heavy springs can humble an athlete. It builds long, controlled strength through the whole body, and it's the backbone of our Reformer Beginner, Basic, and Challenge classes.

The Tower — spring work with a stable frame

The tower is a vertical frame with push-through bars, roll-back bars, and arm and leg springs. Because the frame doesn't move under you, it isolates beautifully — you feel exactly which muscles are working. Tower Fundamentals is where you learn spinal articulation and shoulder mechanics that quietly improve everything else you do, on the reformer and off it.

The Wunda Chair — small equipment, honest feedback

The wunda chair looks like a padded box with a sprung pedal, and it is famously honest: there's nowhere to hide. It demands balance, single-leg strength, and real core control, which is why we introduce it in Tower & Wunda Beginner classes with plenty of coaching. If your goals include stairs, hiking, golf, or simply ageing strongly, the chair earns its keep.

Mat and Core Suspend — strength you carry anywhere

Matwork is the original Pilates — just you, gravity, and control. Our Core Suspend & Mat Flow classes add suspension straps to matwork, borrowing the springs' assistance for people building up to the unassisted versions. It's a deceptively sweaty hour.

So which class do you book?

  • Completely new? Start with Reformer Beginner, or The Starter Package for a private introduction first.
  • Comfortable on the reformer? Add Tower Fundamentals — it will refine your reformer work noticeably.
  • Craving a challenge? Reformer Challenge and the Wunda classes will find your weak links kindly but surely.
  • Recovering, prenatal, or managing a condition? Book a private session so a clinical teacher can tailor the apparatus to you.

One good habit: rotate. The apparatus were designed as a system, and bodies that move across all of them develop the most balanced strength. All of our group class packages work for every group class on the schedule — reformer, tower, wunda, and mat alike.
